iPhone 5 preorder ‘begins’ in China, though release date is uncertain

The new iPhone 5 may still be months away and Apple has yet to utter a single word on the device’s arrival. As per rumors, the device is expected to find light sometimes later this year. But some opportunistic retailers in China have started to accept pre-orders for the gadget. Yes, believe it or not, you can preorder for iPhone 5 in China over a few sellers including Taobao, a unit of Alibaba Group. The retailers actually want to earn profits from people’s craze towards new Apple products in China.

Apple’s new products come very late to China. Before their release in the mainland, the devices will be available in Hong Kong and other major markets. Hence, the Chinese retailers often bring the gadgets to the mainland for increased prices. However, Chinese Apple fans will not hesitate to buy the items for high prices. It is the case with the new iPhone 5, which is expected to be the best upgrade of the iPhone series Apple has ever produced. Indeed, there are a large number of Apple fans, who are anxiously awaiting the launch of next iPhone version

Early iPhone 5 release date changes tactics

The whole world is expecting Apple to unveil the iPhone 5 at around the October time, to follow the company’s release pattern with that of the iPhone 4S. Now imagine the huge shock amongst consumers if Apple now decides to change that and release the next generation iPhone a few months early.

Apple are not really known for providing too many surprises in previous product launches, as they have often come at a time when consumers expect them and they usually always line up with the various collection of leaks prior to an announcement. However, one new massive rumor has just surfaced right at the end of the week, claiming that Apple is actually going to unveil their next iPhone in August – as soon as next month.

This little known tech blog has even provided a date as well believe it or not. According to their ‘unnamed industry sources’, the iPhone 5 is going to be announced at an Apple event onTuesday August 7. Just for reference purposes, Apple also announced the iPhone 4S on Tuesday 4th October 2011.

As you can imagine, an August release date for the next iPhone would take everyone by surprise. We were all expecting the device to come out in October alongside iOS 6 and possibly a smaller iPad, but has something drastically changed the mindset of CEO Tim Cook to make him decide that August should now be the launch month?

Android, iOS Called Dominant Smartphones

Google's Android and Apple's iOS account run 86 percent of the U.S. smartphones, leaving RIM's Blackberry and other mobile platforms -- we're looking at you, Windows Phone -- in the dust.

That's the latest word from research firm Nielsen, which reports that Android's lead in the U.S. smartphone market continues its steady rise. In fact, nearly 52 percent of U.S. smartphone owners use Android devices. Second-place iOS has a healthy 34.3 percent of the market.

Third-place RIM has just 8.1 percent, and other operating systems take the final 5.9 percent of the pie.

Obviously, the Nielsen numbers are very good news for Android and iOS. And the gulf between the two frontrunners and the rest of the mobile OS appears to be widening.

Among smartphone owners who purchased a handset in June 2012, 54.6 percent chose an Android device, and 36.2 percent bought an iPhone.

Meanwhile, Microsoft's Windows Phone platform continues to languish. That's despite positive reviews, a slick "live tile" interface, abundant advertising, and support from major phone manufacturers including Nokia, HTC, and Samsung.

Earlier, the same website had reported that the launch date of iPhone 5 has been pushed ahead to August in order to compete better againstSamsung Galaxy S III.

Yellow Jacket: The iPhone case that doubles as a stun gun

For those whose personal safety is a major concern, this iPhone case can give your assailants a shock therapy for ever trying to mess with you.

Things have reached new heights when it comes to iPhone cases and personal safety. If you were a fan of the SmartGuard iPhone case that features a pepper spray canister, you might also be a fan of the Yellow Jacket. This iPhone case comes equipped with a 650K-volt stun gun that could be used to save your life in dangerous situations… as long as you use it properly.

As part of an Indiegogo project, creators Seth Froom and Sean Simone say they aim to create the “world’s first smartphone defense case.” For some perspective, the average personal stun gun voltage can range anywhere between 100 to 775K volts, so this case would be on the higher end of power.

Still, does the idea of putting a stun gun next to your face every time you pick up a call sound ideal to you? The project understands your concerns — which is why the case contains a safety rotational cap and switch to prevent accidental charges.

APPLE IPHONE 5: BEANS POSSIBLY SPILLED ON RELEASE-DATE ANNOUNCEMENT, FOUR WEEKS AWAY

Is it solid intel or just another lame grasp at scooping everyone on Apple's biggest news since, well, the last iPhone announcement?

A new report says an announcement from Apple about its next-generation iPhone is just around the corner. This piece of news emanates from tech site Know Your Mobile, which cites a "reliable industry source who wishes to remain anonymous" – don't they all? – who says Aug. 7 is the day Apple fans and the service providers who offer the phones should mark on their calendars. It'll happen during a keynote speech that day, the site says.

But before you dismiss this as just another rumor, chatter about a release-date announcement has been slowly moving up over the past couple of weeks. For quite a while, consensus was an October release to line up with last year's launch of the iPhone 4S. But a couple of weeks ago, September became a popular prediction for some industry watchers, and just a few days ago we first got wind of a possible August debut.

Review: Nokia Lumia 900 and Windows Phone OS

It’s no secret that makers of every touch screen smart phone hitting the market these days that isn’t an iPhone has to develop its design and function with the iPhone in mind. Apple’s 500 lb. gorilla sets the sale benchmark and forges the touchstone experience for many smart phone users.

We had a chance to try out a new Windows Phone – the Nokia Lumia 900 – to test how its interface and performance furthered the idea of what smart phone can and should do.

The 900 features a 4.3-inch display termed AMOLED – for active-matrix organic light-emitting diode. According to Nokia, the technology “increases the refresh rate of the screen and enhances the contrast ratio while reducing energy consumption to increase battery life. The ClearBlack Display feature blocks incoming light reflections through a polarized layer to improve screen visibility under direct sunlight.”

All that means the phone’s big screen – bigger than the current iPhone – and bright. As silly as it might sound, that’s an important feature right out of the box as the friendly vibrant image invites the user to start playing with the phone’s abilities.

The phone’s overall built quality is solid and stable in the hand. And – imagine this – Nokia didn’t make their $400+ smart phone out of glass.
